== Abstract ==
{{Abstract}}
A recurring observer report notes a perceived inconsistency between the public emergence of the term '''“[[Mandela Effect]]”''' and the widely documented death of '''Nelson Mandela''' in 2013.<ref name="official_death">Official historical records document Nelson Mandela’s death on December 5, 2013.</ref> Multiple observers recall discussions of Mandela’s death years earlier, despite records indicating he was alive at the time those discussions allegedly occurred. This entry examines the temporal mismatch between collective memory formation and established historical chronology.
{{/Abstract}}

== Core Observation ==
Observers report encountering references to Nelson Mandela’s death prior to 2013, including recollections of news coverage, memorial discussions, or classroom instruction suggesting he had already died.<ref name="observer_reports">Compiled observer recollections from informal reports and logged testimony.</ref>

Notably, the term '''“[[Mandela Effect]]”''' itself began appearing in online discourse circa 2009,<ref name="term_emergence">Archived forum discussions and early web references dated to approximately 2009.</ref> four years before Mandela’s recorded death. This creates a paradox in which a phenomenon appears to be named after an event that had not yet occurred according to official records.

== Documented Timeline ==
{{Timeline}}
* '''Pre-2009''' – Informal circulation of individual memory reports asserting Mandela’s death<ref name="pre2009_memories">Secondary analysis notes recurring claims of pre-2009 recollections; contemporaneous documentation is limited or absent.</ref>
* '''2009''' – First documented appearances of the term ''Mandela Effect'' in online forums<ref name="term_emergence" />
* '''2013''' – Recorded death of Nelson Mandela (December 5, 2013)<ref name="official_death" />
{{/Timeline}}

== Anomaly Description ==
{{Anomaly}}
The anomaly arises from the apparent inversion of causal order:

* The naming and discussion of a memory-based phenomenon precede the historical event associated with its name.

This inversion challenges conventional assumptions regarding linear causality, memory anchoring, and historical reference points.<ref name="anomaly_analysis">Analytical synthesis based on comparative timeline review of term emergence and recorded historical chronology.</ref>
{{/Anomaly}}

== Possible Interpretive Frameworks ==
{{Interpretations}}
* '''Observer Creation Theory''' – The phenomenon name emerges independently of the event timeline
* '''Retrocausal Memory Consolidation''' – Later events influence earlier memory formation
* '''Narrative Backfill''' – Collective explanation forms after historical stabilization
* '''Social Memory Pre-Echo''' – Anticipatory attribution within cultural discourse

== Confidence Assessment ==
{{Confidence|level=Moderate}}
This assessment is based on recurring independent observer reports across multiple years. Confidence is limited by the absence of contemporaneous physical documentation predating 2013.<ref name="confidence_notes">Confidence level reflects repeated reporting across observers, with limitations due to lack of contemporaneous artifacts (e.g., archived broadcasts, dated documents) verifying pre-2013 “death” references.</ref>

== Source Classification ==
{{SourceClass|type=Secondary Analysis}}
This entry synthesizes multiple Primary Observer Logs without reproducing raw testimony in full.
